Heater Core Issues and Repair Tacoma Lakewood Puyallup
If you find that your car heating system is no longer working, chances are you have a heater core problem. The heater core is a radiator like device used in heating the inside of your car. The heating core is actually a winding tube just like a radiator. In order to heat the inside of your car, the hot coolant from the vehicle’s engine passes through the heating core. Vents in the car's interior allows passengers to open and adjust the vents to direct the heat to various regions of the car's interior while a fan helps to push the air into the car.
In most cases heater core leaks or corrosion is a result of poor maintenance, so keeping your car well maintained may help to prevent damage to the heater core. However, should you experience heater core problems, you need to get it repaired as going without heat in your car can be dangerous for several reasons.
Without heat during extremely cold weather frost can build up on the inside of your car windows making it impossible for you to see clearly, which can cause a driving hazard for you and other vehicles on the road.
If you have to drive long distances during cold weather in a car without heat, you may be subjecting your self to hypothermia or frost bite. Becoming excessively cold can also make it more difficult to grasp the wheel properly and add to feelings of general discomfort.
In some cases, a leak in the heating core may be a small one and may be extremely easy to repair, costing only a small amount of money, or may even be able to be repaired using a heating core sealant. However, if the heater core is corroded and has a sizeable leak then it may become necessary to have the entire core replaced.
Cost of Replacing a Heating Core
Replacing the heating core can be extremely expensive as this is a rather labor intensive job. The exact price will depend a good deal on the make and model of car you own and how much the replacement core will cost. While replacing the core is expensive it may be worth it, if your car is fairly new or is good overall condition since replacing the core is cheaper than trying to replace the entire car.
If you don't have the funds to pay for the repairs up front, then make prior arrangements with the repair shop before scheduling an appointment for them to repair your car. There is nothing worse than having a car repaired and then not being able to get it back from the repair shop until after you pay a bill in full because you did not take the time to make prior arrangements.
Keep in mind however, if you keep your car properly maintained and have it periodically checked over by that auto repair shop, you may never need to have a heating coil repaired or replaced.
