O2 Sensor Replacement Tacoma Puyallup Lakewood
What Happens When Your 02 Sensor Goes Bad?
Since 1980 almost every car made has been equipped with an O2 or Oxygen sensor. The purpose of the oxygen sensor is to measure the percentage of oxygen compared to the amount of gas in your exhaust. It then sends this information to your car's engine so that the engine can make adjustments to help keep the ratio of oxygen to gas properly balanced. When the ratio of 02 to gas is in proper balance then your car emits less harmful fuel emissions into the atmosphere and your car is more fuel efficient. Too much gas for the percentage of oxygen and the toxic emissions from your car increases. Too much oxygen and other types of toxic emissions are given off from your car and your car begins to have poorer fuel performance and can in some cases actually cause engine damage.
If the 02 sensor in your car fails then it either sends the wrong information to engine or it does not send any information forcing your car's engine to “guess” at the gas oxygen ration. This generally results in your car using excess fuel and if left uncorrected causes damage to the engine.
Signs of a Bad 02 SensorThe Check Engine Light- The check engine light can go on for a number of different reasons, but if your car has between 45,000 (cars 1990 and older) or 65,000 miles (newer cars) on it and the 02 sensor has not been changed then there is good chance that this is the problem and should have your sensor tested.
Your car is getting poorer gas mileage than it was getting.
Your engine sounds rough when idling .
You engine starts misfiring.
You feel a hesitation when accelerating.
Knowing the signs that your O2 sensor is going bad, and replacing it before it fails completely can keep your car running efficiently and save wear on your engine. However, most people simply don't know what signs they should be looking for. Here are some signs that could indicate a bad Oxygen sensor and you should then have the sensor tested.
Changing an 02 Sensor
An 02 sensor is relatively inexpensive and simple to change. If you are a back yard mechanic and are used to working on your own automobile then changing this sensor should not be much of a problem, unless it is badly corroded in which case you might want to have a skilled mechanic change the sensor for you. If you have no experience working on cars then going to a certified mechanic is your best bet, as the repairs won't cost you overly much and is well worth it when you are once again saving money on gas because your car is running properly.
Give us a call now at 253-627-0252 and let us help you if you have an O2 Sensor to replace.
