Automobile Belts & Hoses: Under the Hood Inspections Tacoma Lakewood Puyallup
Power steering on vehicles was first used on cars all the way back in the 1920ís. While some systems in vehicles today have grown more refined and modern, the original operating principle remains fairly unchanged. Power steering systems are a large part of what brings together the strength and power of the hydraulic pressure within the mechanical steering linkages. As the power steering pump pressurizes the hydraulics system, power steering fluids run through all the valves and hoses. Providing the plungers or pistons the ability to move the mechanics of the steering back and forth as the wheel on your vehicle turns. As the pumps begin to come to a stop, the pressure will drop and the power steering then loses all its hydraulic power. However this is not the worst thing that could happen, when small bits of the rapidly disintegrating pump break away, they may become lodged in the small nooks of the system, causing an even more potentially expensive problem within your vehicle.
Knowing when itís time to get your power steering serviced:
Keep an eye on the power steering fluid for signs of it getting low, if left neglected for long periods of time it can accelerate pump water. First step would be to check the pressure and the return hoses for any sort of leakage. Next you can continue by checking the steering assembly or the rack for leakage. However if the pump continues to whine and groan, check to see if everything seems to be topped of just fine and there are no visible signs of leaking. It is possible that damage may have already been done in this case. While it may be time to replace the power steering pump or fluid, it is best to get your vehicle serviced to determine and pinpoint the exact problem in your power steering system.
